If nothing else, it has been an eventful and eye opening year for Barbados born songstress Rihanna. In addition to recording one of the most popular singles of 2005, the hypnotic "Pon De Replay" (which bass bumped out of more car windows while igniting a slew of barbeques last summer), she won over the masses with her charming Bajan persona.

"So much has happened in my life, I feel like I've grown five years in a year," she gushes. No doubt, by the time Def Jam Records released Rihanna's debut album Music of the Sun, it was obvious that this young woman was more than a one-hit wonder. With a work ethic reminiscent of Motown sisters back in the day when soul reigned supreme, Rihanna traveled throughout the world.

2005 saw Rihanna rocking the mic on tour with Gwen Stefani, making crowds sweat in Japan, posing for magazine covers in Los Angeles and shooting her first film role for Bring It On Yet Again. This was a long way from the quiet life she led in Barbados in the parish of St.Michael. Robyn Rihanna Fenty has come through her musical initiation process unscathed. And now she is poised for everything that 2006 may hold as she readies to do it again with her sophomore release A Girl Like Me.

"I grew up so much this past year. I had no choice. To pursue my dreams, and with their support, I left my entire family in Barbados to move to the States. It was a little scary to have no friends or family and all of a sudden step into a recording studio," recalled Rihanna.

"2005 taught me the dedication and responsibility it takes to make this dream a reality. Waking up at 5:00 am to start rehearsals, the training, the schoolwork, interviews, video shoots, going all day; it always seemed glamorous but it is real work. My love for music and singing will never change but the rose colored glasses are no longer so rosy."

"Many times over the past year, I didn't have anyone my age with me. When recording this album, I wanted it to seem like I was having a personal conversation with girls my age," says the eighteen-year-old singer. "People think, because we're young, we aren't complex, but that's not true. We deal with life and love and broken hearts in the same way a woman a few years older might. My goal on A Girl Like Me was to find songs that express the many things young women want to say, but might not know how."

Dropping from the harmonic heavens to the groovalistic dance floor, Rihanna has returned with another single that will have listeners begging the d.j. to play it one more time. Produced by Jason Rotem, the sizzling "S.O.S." is bringing the summer heat early this year. With its hypnotic beat and enticing melody, "S.O.S." utilizes the electro-funk of Soft Cell's '80s classic "Tainted Love" to create a soulful anthem of young love.

"I got excited when I first heard this track and three days later, it was recorded," Rihanna says. Turning heads with its rebel sound, "S.O.S." has been used as the theme song for their NIKE latest women's line, which can be viewed on NikeWomen.com. "Making that commercial was yet another new experience," she says. "It took six days to shoot, but working with choreographer Jamie King (Madonna and Shakira) was amazing."

Focusing on progressing as an artist, Rihanna has recorded a compelling track of heartbreak called "Unfaithful." Penned by her label-mate Ne-Yo and Stargate, the song documents the tragic decay of a relationship when another person starts cheating.

Yet, in this instance, it is the girl who has strayed. "On a lot of records, men talk about cheating as though it's all a game. For me, 'Unfaithful' is not just about stepping out on your man, but the pain that it causes both parties."

Perhaps the most surprising track is the rock meets island vibe of "Kisses Don't Lie." Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken, the principles of her production company, SRP, used a mixture of Caribbean elements, electric guitar and a mesmerizing bassline." Coming from Barbados, I really hadn't heard that much rock music," Rihanna confesses. "Touring with Gwen changed my perspective. So, when I was discussing this project with L.A. Reid, Chairman of Island Def Jam Records, I made sure to say I want to experiment with some rock."

During the recording of A Girl Like Me, Rihanna jet set down to Jamaica to record with Sean Paul on the yardie duet "Break It Off." Smiling, Rihanna explains, "I have so much respect and love for Sean Paul. He took me to visit the Bob Marley Museum before going into the studio, which was an amazing experience. When we finally got to the studio, I felt as though Marley's spirit was in the room with us."

With A Girl Like Me, the beautiful singer proves that her breakthrough was no fluke. After selling 1 million copies worldwide of her debut Music Of The Sun, once again, the summer belongs to Rihanna.

Actress Maura Tierney says she's having surgery to remove a tumor in her breast.

Tierney, who recently wrapped a long-running stint on the NBC medical drama "ER," issued a statement about the surgery on Monday, giving no details on her condition and when she'd due to have the operation.

Says Tierney: "I will not know either my exact diagnosis or course of treatment until that surgery is performed."

Tierney says her doctors assured her "this is a very treatable condition," and she's "very optimistic as to the outcome."

Tierney's setback has delayed production on her new NBC series, "Parenthood," for eight weeks. The network said the medical drama "Mercy" will instead premiere this fall.

Despite complications, Mira Sorvino welcomes 'miracle baby

After a stressful pregnancy and a series of complications, Mira Sorvino gave birth to her third child, Holden Paul Terry Backus, and both mother and son are doing well.

Sorvino and husband, Christopher Backus, were thrilled to welcome 8-pound, 12-ounce Holden on June 22 in Los Angeles.

"As soon as they placed him in my arms I knew it had all been worth it," Sorvino told People.com. "He is my miracle baby. With everything that threatened this pregnancy and both of our lives, he came out of it completely unscathed: perfectly healthy, beautiful and wonderful!"

Holden joins 4-year-old sister, Mattea, and 3-year-old brother, Johnny. In an official statement, the couple announced, "We ared to bring our beautiful healthy son home to his brother and sister. We are blessed to have a home filled with so much love."

Sorvino faced considerable difficulties with her third pregnancy, including placenta previa, which forced her to spend weeks in the hospital and then be on bed rest.

"I developed a blood clot due to all the inactivity and had to be anti-coagulated for months to prevent a pulmonary embolism," she explained. "I spent another 2-1/2 weeks at the hospital, during which time, missing the children and my husband and knowing what the separation was doing to the kids became almost unbearable. Prior to this nine-week hospital stay, I had only ever spent one night away from Johnny and Mattea."

The 41-year-old actress also suffered through a long labor and delivery. "The baby was very big and he came a couple of weeks early so it took longer than we thought," she said. "During the day we had some scary difficulties with the epidural as I achieved almost no progress with the labor and then at night the placenta created problems again. Although it was not blocking the baby's path as it had done for almost the entire pregnancy, it started causing me a substantial loss of blood. Just as we began begging for a C-section, the situation turned around and the end of the birth was very easy."

But it was all worth it in the end for Sorvino, who says Mattea and Johnny love playing with their new baby brother. "They make up songs to sing to him! My only challenge has been convincing them not to touch him and pet him while he's sleeping, because they wake him up!"

Actress Mira Sorvino has confirmed she gave birth to her third child in Los Angeles after a difficult pregnancy.

The Oscar winner told People.com son Holden Paul Terry Backus was born June 22 and weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces.

He is the third child for the "Mighty Aphrodite" star and her actor husband Christopher Backus. The couple are also the parents of a 4-year-old daughter named Mattea and a 3-year-old son called Johnny.

"We are overjoyed to bring our beautiful healthy son home to his brother and sister," Sorvino and Backus said in a statement issued to People magazine Monday. "We are blessed to have a home filled with so much love."

During her third pregnancy, the 41-year-old actress reportedly suffered placenta previa for which she was hospitalized for weeks, then placed on complete bed rest.

SYDNEY (Reuters Life!) – Living happily ever after needn't only be for fairy tales. Australian researchers have identified what it takes to keep a couple together, and it's a lot more than just being in love.

A couple's age, previous relationships and even whether they smoke or not are factors that influence whether their marriage is going to last, according to a study by researchers from the Australian National University.

The study, entitled "What's Love Got to Do With It," tracked nearly 2,500 couples -- married or living together -- from 2001 to 2007 to identify factors associated with those who remained together compared with those who divorced or separated.

It found that a husband who is nine or more years older than his wife is twice as likely to get divorced, as are husbands who get married before they turn 25.

Children also influence the longevity of a marriage or relationship, with one-fifth of couples who have kids before marriage -- either from a previous relationship or in the same relationship -- having separated compared to just nine percent of couples without children born before marriage.

Women who want children much more than their partners are also more likely to get a divorce.

A couple's parents also have a role to play in their own relationship, with the study showing some 16 percent of men and women whose parents ever separated or divorced experienced marital separation themselves compared to 10 percent for those whose parents did not separate.

Also, partners who are on their second or third marriage are 90 percent more likely to separate than spouses who are both in their first marriage.

Not surprisingly, money also plays a role, with up to 16 percent of respondents who indicated they were poor or where the husband -- not the wife -- was unemployed saying they had separated, compared with only nine percent of couples with healthy finances.

And couples where one partner, and not the other, smokes are also more likely to have a relationship that ends in failure.

Factors found to not significantly affect separation risk included the number and age of children born to a married couple, the wife's employment status and the number of years the couple had been employed.

The study was jointly written by Dr Rebecca Kippen and Professor Bruce Chapman from The Australian National University, and Dr Peng Yu from the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.

Casting is under way to find contestants to compete for the chance to be Hilton's new best friend forever — or BFF.

Hilton, 28, wants to expand her brand in the Arab world.

He said the plan is to build "My New BFF" into a global franchise, with Hilton searching for BFFs around the world.

Hilton previously filmed two seasons in Los Angeles for MTV and one in London for British television. The second season of the American edition premiered Tuesday.

The Dubai version is "intended for broadcast throughout the Arab region, so it will be sold to networks throughout that area. "The hope is to sell it internationally, (in) Europe and Asia and the United States if possible."

As we reported last week, “The Surrogate” has nothing in common with the similarly titled upcoming sci-fi movie starring Bruce Willis. This “Surrogate” is based on Kathryn Mackel’s 2004 novel. Forced by medical circumstances into hiring a surrogate mother, a childless couple settles on an apparently perfect candidate.
Unfortunately, the woman turns out to be insane. Should’ve checked those references better, eh? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Berry would play the would-be mother, not the insane surrogate.
While official negotiations haven’t begun with Berry, Fox is eager for their “X-Men” star to sign on. Seeing as she is fresh off a long maternity leave, she could certainly bring a lot of energy to the part of a wannabe mother.
“The Surrogate” is also a return for Verhoeven, who hasn’t made a Hollywood-based movie since “Hollow Man” in 2000, but has been sought after since his last film “Black Book,” which earned numerous nominations and awards.
The director is known for his shock value tactics, and would likely tap them for this insane surrogate story..

Initially she tried her hand as an actress but most recently has made her name as a dog-breeder.The Hearst family name is one of the best known in the US. Her grandfather – press baron William Randolph - built up one of the largest magazine and newspaper businesses in the world.

He was caricatured by Orson Welles in classic film Citizen Kane. Her father Randolph was valued at $1.8 billion shortly before his death in 2001 at the age of 85.

Just over nine months after giving birth to her second child, Tori Spelling has certainly shed those pregnancy pounds -- plus much more. Since the beginning of February, the 35-year-old has lost an estimated 40 lbs and caused quite a few whispers given her (very) honey body beneath her flowing summer dress at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice on Saturday.

Despite her perky persona when out in public, Spelling’s rapid weight loss is apparently due in large part to the stress of her estranged relationship with mother Candy. Last year the "90210" starlet released a tell-all book about her famous family’s secrets and now her mother has bitten back and divulged even more in "Candyland," which hit bookstores last month.

"I took so much crap for so long; I needed to get the truth out there so I was brutally honest," Tori recently told Tarts regarding her controversial publication. "But I don't really know what this will do to my relationship with my mother. It’s a grey area we don’t talk about — but it’s been a very complicated 34 years. People still perceive me as this little rich girl which isn't the case, but they prefer that conception no matter what I say."

According to a source close to Spelling, she hasn’t enlisted any crazy diets or weight loss schemes but is running and diligently watching everything she eats -- but her fragile frame still has friends a little concerned. In February Spelling told Us Weekly that she does feel the "pressure" to be thin in Tinseltown and found that losing the lard was much easier after the second pregnancy.

A rep for Spelling did not respond for comment.

"Tori Spelling has always been petite, so she may be healthy at this small size, but might consider adding some strength training to her fitness regime to add extra definition," celebrity trainer and Exhale Spa’s Core Fusion expert teacher Elise Gulan (who does not work with Spelling) told Tarts. "Hollywood is obsessed with being thin. The industry can often put pressure on female actresses to be a size zero, when we should be embracing healthy, womanly curves rather than fighting against them."

"I was like 'Baby bump? As hard as I work on my abs?!'" she told Oprah Winfrey for the talk show host's O Magazine's April 2009 issue.

"Here's the scoop," Michelle continued. "Not pregnant. And not planning on it."

In fact, Michelle is very interested in staying in shape, admitting she works out regularly, but not as much as her husband, President Barack Obama.

"There's a small gym here that has everything we need. I work out about four or five days a week - and Barack does six," the First Lady said. "He's a workout zealot."

And as for that workout, Michelle said she does the treadmill and weights, as well as some other physically demanding activities.

"I also do some jump rope, some kickboxing -- and I'd like to take up Pilates, if I could figure out whether there's time," she told Oprah. "After I had Malia, I began to prioritize exercise because I realized that my happiness is tied to how I feel about myself. I want my girls to see a mother who takes care of herself, even if that means I have to get up at 4:30 so I can do a workout."

Food is a big deal for the Obama family too. On the campaign trail to the White House, Michelle said she and her family made efforts to eat natural foods and cut out "junk."

Miley Cyrus wants to return to the big screen. Just not as Hannah Montana.

"I feel like this is a TV show. and we got really lucky with having the material to make one movie," she said Monday at a press conference for Hannah Montana: The Movie (out April 10). "To do another one, I feel like it takes away the reality of it all."

But she would love to keep her alter ego on television.

"We are continuing to do season three, and we all wish to do a season four, and I would love to do that if the time is right and if that's what everyone agrees on," she said. "I don't know if I would do another film, but I would love to do another season. I think that would be what we would all agree on."

This summer, she begins shooting a movie that Notebook author Nicholas Sparks wrote especially for her. Sparks has been simultaneously writing a novel (due this fall), from which the screenplay is adapted.

"You never really hear that the movie was written before the book," said Cyrus, 16. "It's kind of a weird way to do that. But he wrote the movie before he wrote the book, and he wrote it with me in mind."

Although the movie is under wraps, it deals with family and love issues.

"I've always been lucky to play parts that relate to me -- and this doesn't at all," Cyrus said of her upcoming role. "I have my issues, but not as bad as this chick! I am happy to play someone who is just kind of out there and not someone that I am like."

She said she also looks forward to seeing "if I'm a good actress or not, or if I'm just good at playing myself."

Asked what kids should do if they're torn between pursuing an acting dream or going to college, Cyrus joked, "I say 'do it.' Be a freak. Go to Hollywood."

Throughout the course of the show’s 10 seasons, Aniston’s Rachel – one of the standout characters – went from being a pampered daddy’s girl to an assured, self-reliant woman whose on-again, off-again romance with Ross was the hot topic around office water coolers. But perhaps the character’s greatest influence in the first few seasons was her shag hairdo – known simply as The Rachel” – that was widely copied by young women in the mid-1990s. In 1995, her mother went on national television and divulged personal childhood information that infuriated Aniston to the point of cutting off communication. Four years later, her mother exacerbated the estrangement by publishing a book, From Mother and Daughter to Friends (1999), which documented their strained relationships while detailing her own life’s ups and downs. Meanwhile, Aniston reveled in the success of “Friends,” which helped launch a second career in mainly independent feature films. She landed a supporting turn as the unhappily married wife of a womanizing stockbroker in Edward Burns' "She's the One" (1996), then had an acerbic cameo as an overwhelmed young woman juggling career and motherhood in the otherwise forgettable "'Til There Was You" (1997). Her first lead, playing an ambitious advertising executive who creates a fake boyfriend to insure her climb up the corporate ladder, in "Picture Perfect" (1997) proved both a critical and box-office disappointment. But Aniston bounced back in the more dramatic role of a pregnant woman who forms a bond with her gay roommate (Paul Rudd) in the modest hit, "The Object of My Affection" (1998). To the delight of film geeks everywhere, Aniston had a memorable supporting role in “Office Space” (1999), Mike Judge’s hilarious satire on the drudgery and absurdity of corporate life. Aniston played Joanna, a dissatisfied waitress who meets a bored office drone (Ron Livingston) acting out his inner slacker fantasies after a mishap with a hypnotist. Meanwhile, in 1998, Aniston became romantically linked to Hollywood’s resident golden boy, Brad Pitt, which immediately became the obsession du jour of tabloids around the world. In fact, the two were Hollywood’s reigning “It” couple for the next several years, especially after they were married in fairy tale-like fashion in July 2000. For a spell, they were considered a Hollywood oddity – a down-to-earth married couple who seemed destined to remain together for the rest of their lives. Despite their constant appearances together in the public eye, the couple worked together professionally only once when Pitt appeared on a 2001 episode of "Friends" as a formerly fat high school classmate with a long-simmering resentment of Rachel. Meanwhile, Aniston’s film career continued unabated, as she appeared as the love interest of a salesman (Mark Wahlberg) who joins a heavy metal band in "Rock Star" (2001), anchoring the lightweight, high-concept film as its most convincing and emotional presence. In 2002, Aniston had an impressive turn on the indie-film scene in "The Good Girl," playing a bored and forlorn Midwestern housewife dissatisfied with her life and pot-smoking husband (John C. Reilly), who discovers that bucking her staid life is harder than she imagined. The following year, Aniston paired with Jim Carrey for the hit comedy feature "Bruce Almighty" (2003) as the girlfriend of a man gifted with God's powers. She fared even better in her follow-up, "Along Came Polly" (2004), playing against type as a free spirit who teaches her risk-fearing new beau (Ben Stiller) how to take chances. That year, Aniston and company made their final bows on “Friends.” A hit during its first few seasons, “Friends” lagged a bit in the middle, only to make a dominant resurgence in the latter seasons, exiting the airwaves at the top of its ratings and comedic game. Meanwhile, the role made Aniston a superstar, earning her four consecutive Emmy nominations (2000-03) – twice as Best Supporting Actress and twice as Best Lead Actress – which led to a win in the Lead Actress category in 2002, as well as a Golden Globe the following year. As she moved on to her next projects, Aniston found herself in the center of a media tempest when she announced her separation from husband Brad Pitt, who allegedly began a romance with actress Angelina Jolie on the set of their film "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" (2005) – a rumor that later proved to be true. The drama played out in the entertainment media for several months, with Aniston finally giving a teary-eyed interview to Vanity Fair that – while taking some pains to play fair and amicable – decidedly cast her as the unsuspecting victim, Pitt as the cad and Jolie as the home wrecker. As the media story took shape, Aniston soon became ridiculed by some who saw her as desperately holding on to Pitt’s flame, while her ex – they finalized their divorce in October 2005 – traipsed around the world with Jolie, donating to world relief efforts and adopting children from impoverished countries. Some of her friends like Cox and singer Sheryl Crow rose to her defense, claiming the media portrayal was unfair – and in some cases misogynist – but by then, the damage was done to Aniston’s reputation. Ironically, during the media firestorm surrounding her painful public split from Pitt, Aniston was shooting "The Break-Up" (2006) in Chicago with actor Vince Vaughn, playing a couple struggling to continue to cohabitate in the condo both refuse to leave, despite having ended their relationship. Rumors swirled of a budding relationship between the two stars, and despite denials, they did appear to be a couple by fall of 2005 when Aniston had two films hitting theaters – "Derailed," which cast the actress and Clive Owen as two married business executives who are blackmailed by a violent criminal after they have had an affair; and Rob Reiner's "Rumor Has It," which starred Aniston as a woman who learns that her family was the inspiration for the book and film "The Graduate" (1967). Meanwhile, more rumors swirled that her and Vaughn were engaged, but by October 2006, it was clear the couple was no longer together. In April 2008, Aniston was then linked to songwriter and notorious playboy, John Mayer, who later hinted to reporters that the rumors were indeed true. Four months after Aniston and Mayer were no longer together, back-and-forth stories over who dumped who plagued the tabloids, as Aniston was again unfairly portrayed as the “desperate girl” who was unlucky in love. Thankfully, Aniston had no shortage of projects lined up to take her mind off of personal tribulations. The often cruel blog press took gleeful delight in the title of her next project, “He’s Just Not That Into You” (2009), based on the best-selling guidebook for women in bad relationships, written by former “Sex and the City” (HBO, 1998-2004) scribe, Greg Behrendt. Beating the romantic comedy into the theaters was Aniston’s turn in the tender love story of a man and his dog, again based on a bestseller, “Marley & Me” (2008), co-starring Owen Wilson – no stranger to the hard-knock press, himself, following an attempted suicide in the fall of 2007.
